How Quality PreK Classroom Furniture Can Launch Successful, Lifelong Learners
First impressions matter, especially to wide-eyed little learners entering their first PreK classroom. The experience can set the tone for their entire education career. That’s what makes designing and furnishing PreK classrooms so important. The stakes are high.
But the solution isn’t impossible. In fact, it’s quite doable when schools use an intentional, student-focused design approach and PreK classroom furniture made specifically for early childhood education.
In this blog, we’ll recommend pre-kindergarten tables, desks, chairs and storage that help create engaged, lifelong learners – and teachers who feel more supported in their work.
[NOTE: This is our second blog on this topic. See our previous post, How to Choose Early Childhood Furniture for PreK Classrooms.]
Perhaps the Most Important Year
Unlike preschool, which is tailored for kids between the ages of 2 and 4, PreK is for 4- and 5-year-olds. It’s meant to take place the year before kindergarten to prepare children for the academic, social and emotional challenges ahead.
It’s a foundational year, for sure, according to Suzanne Bouffant, education researcher and early education author. For most children, PreK provides their initial exposure to school.
“They develop certain feelings, perceptions and ideas about school. It’s a great opportunity to get kids off on the right foot,” Bouffant explained. Or, in a few cases, create “enduring negative emotions about school.” She believes it’s not enough to look at whether kids do PreK, but how it’s done.
“Quality,” she said, “really matters.”
At Stake: Improving Kids’ Lives
Many researchers agree with Bouffant, and they support the push for universal preschool and/or PreK. Student participation often correlates to higher standardized test scores, reduced special education placement, and increased high school graduation rates. Though something even more important may be percolating, according to a May 2021 NPR report.
“There's growing evidence that preschool can permanently improve kids' lives — but it's not necessarily because it makes them smarter. It seems more related to making them more disciplined and motivated ...”
Obviously, adequate teacher training, staffing, curriculum and funding hugely impact PreK quality. But one thing educations can control is creating the optimum PreK physical environment.
Furnishing to Foster Safe, Welcoming, Inspired PreK Spaces
Creating a great PreK classroom requires a thoughtful curation of furniture that conveys, “You belong.” It should also be fun and foster curiosity and a love of learning. It’s about striking the right balance between preschool’s heavy emphasis on play-based learning at classroom activity centers (and outdoors) and kindergarten’s more structured, teacher-led learning. This quote also applies to PreK classrooms:
“The value of creating an optimal classroom space for preschoolers should not be underestimated,” according to an article for Early Care and Education (ECE) professionals. “The way you arrange and organize your preschool classroom can have a big impact on safety, learning and behavior.”
The goal: Furnish for kindergarten readiness, but also know that vast academic and SEL differences exist in PreK. That can include separation anxiety, impulse control and focus issues.
Designing a Quality PreK Classroom Using Smith System Furniture
As experts in PreK–12 school furniture, Smith System knows how sensitive students are to their environment. Furniture plays a big role in cueing students on what to do, and when and where to do it. We’re also huge proponents of right-sized furniture that supports comfort, health and posture.
With that in mind, here are innovative PreK furniture options from Smith System. We’ve matched our recommendations to what PreK educators tell us are their top classroom layout priorities.
For Whole-Group and Small-Group Learning
Teachers need to corral fidgeting little bodies and direct busy brains. Students at this age love carpet time, but they’re also learning better self-control and focus by sitting at desks and tables for activities.
Student Desks and Tables
Interchange® is a contemporary line of highly versatile, durable classroom desks and activity tables. A great choice specifically for PreK through second grade is the Interchange® 3-2-1 Desk, which quickly adjusts from 22 to 34 inches in height. Each desk lets two students share a large, cleanable work surface. The desk’s rounded “pie” shape makes it easy to tuck desks into groups of six students.

Student Chairs
For sitting at desks and tables, consider the very practical 12-inch Numbers™ Stack Chair. It provides quality and comfort in a compact design that ensures most little feet can touch the floor. Students have optional 360-degree seating, with enough flex to turn, twist and fidget, as young kids do. Numbers chair is also kind to teachers. It’s easy to lift and stack.
To provide less formal seating, Oodle® stool is a fun option. It features three cylinder-shaped components, each 17 inches in diameter and 6.5 inches high. Educators can set them up for use individually or help students stack them a bit higher. And, by simply flipping a separate, floor-facing disc insert 180 degrees, students can sit still (the insert’s flat side) or enjoy 10 degrees of controlled multidirectional rocking motion (the insert’s convex side).
Whiteboards
Most PreK-ers don’t know how to read yet, so it’s all about voice commands and clear visuals. The Planner® Studio Whiteboard with a laminated whiteboard surface is a great option for teachers. It’s mobile, with a small shelf on both sides to hold markers and erasers. Five color choices give teachers the option to have a few whiteboards color-coded to subject or activity.
For Independent Learning and One-on-One Work
A lot of students at this age need breaks to focus, work independently or finish a task. PreK is also a key window for educators to identify students with learning differences that may require one-on-one help. The versatility of the Interchange® 3-2-1 Desk makes it easy to move it aside for solo work or into a hallway for one-on-one work with an adult. Consider having a few of the 18-inch Numbers™ Stack Chair in the classroom, too, for teaching assistants and volunteers.
For Quiet Time or Calm Space
Being little in a big world can be hard. When turbulence strikes, PreK rooms should have a cozy spot for students to find their inner quiet and calm down, with open sight lines for teachers to monitor progress.
Smith System’s Flowform® Soft Rocker is a compact, upholstered, soft-seating option for a soothing sit. The subtle curved base design ensures safe, controlled rocking motion. Adults love to use the rocker, too.

For Storage
From toys to toad terrariums, building blocks to books, the PreK classroom is a beehive of activity and materials. Teachers need versatile classroom storage systems to stay organized and efficient. They also want low, accessible storage so students take ownership in keeping the classroom tidy.
The Cascade® Cubby is a great solution. Little kids love having their own private cubbies, especially labeled with their name. The Cascade mega-case features six cubby compartments; the mega-cabinet has nine. The open-shelf layout provides space for children to store their coats, backpacks and projects. To keep the classroom flexible, the cubby unit comes with 5-inch lockable casters.
The Cascade storage line-up includes many mobile, mix-and-match options for storing three-dimension teaching aids, toys, art supplies and more. Cascade® Towers and Cabinets meet a variety of storage needs, and they include customizable options like lockable doors, casters, shelves and totes.
Additionally, you can opt for adding a whiteboard back panel to a Cascade unit. Or consider the mobile Cascade® Spiral Noteboard which sits on top of the storage unit.
Furniture Aids PreK Classroom Management, Too
Effective classroom management at the PreK level requires skill and patience. Preschool-aged children have short attention spans and need clear, quick directions. If the classroom is out of control, teaching (and learning) can be very difficult.
“Classroom management in preschool and PreK is more about the classroom culture and environment than it is about managing young children. Your classroom culture includes … how well you have established your classroom rules, routines and procedures, as well as how you connect with your students,” explained PreK Pages, a provider of preschool and PreK curricula and teacher resources.
The right PreK furniture helps in following routines and streamlining transitions for a safer, healthier, more productive learning environment that benefits everyone.
