For this month’s edition of our Employee Spotlight series, get to know David De Hoyos. Discover the most challenging aspect of David’s job, his favorite vacation spot, and why he chooses to be a member of the Smith System team.

How long have you worked at Smith System?

I have been at Smith System for three years.

Why do you choose to continue to work at Smith System?

I continue to choose to be a part of the Smith System team because of the learning opportunities and also the opportunity for growth. I received my degree at Texas A&M University in 2017 in Industrial Engineering and I continue to learn from great mentors at Smith System everyday–Doug, Mo, and Thomas.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

I think there are two aspects of my job that are challenging. The seasonality of the business and the ramp-up in the summer and the processes-making sure everything is staying on track during this busy time. The second one is the safety aspect–how we keep everyone safe during the manufacturing process.

What are some of your favorite aspects of your job?

All of it! If I could choose my favorite aspect, it would be the ability to change processes and see the improvements from changes we are implementing in safety with the manufacturing machines.

Now it’s time for some fun questions! What has been your favorite vacation?

It would have been getting married in Italy but Covid happened, so we are planning to get married in Italy next year. We are also very excited–We are expecting our first child in July!

If you could choose to do anything for the day, what would it be?

Hmm…Right now, it would be golfing. I am still learning because I just recently started playing but one good hit or drive makes it all worth it.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

That would be a burger and fries. I am always looking for a great new burger place to try.

What is your favorite game or sport to watch or play?

To watch and to play would be soccer. I recently played in intramurals with my wife before Covid and hoping to play again soon.

What is one thing that you could not go one day without?

I could never go without my Aggie ring.
