An Invitation to Succeed: How Smith System Helped BAAM Redesign Learning Through Mentorship and Space
At BAAM (Building African American Minds) in Maryland, success is measured not just by academic achievement, but by personal growth, confidence, and resilience. The organization is deeply rooted in its mission: to mentor students by providing academic enrichment, life skills, and character development in a supportive environment. But to nurture the whole student, the physical space had to match the heart of the mission.
When BAAM envisioned a space where students could feel seen, supported, and motivated to grow, they knew it couldn’t be achieved with traditional, static classroom furniture. They needed a partner who understood the power of environment in shaping behavior and outcomes—and that’s where Smith System came in.
“Smith System furniture has been instrumental in creating dynamic, student-focused learning spaces,” shared a program leader. “It’s more than furniture—it’s an invitation to succeed.”
With a focus on flexibility, movement, and student ownership, Smith System provided furniture that supported BAAM’s holistic approach to education. Mobile desks, adaptive seating, and storage allowed BAAM to design multipurpose spaces that could evolve with each learning activity. Whether students are working one-on-one with mentors, collaborating on a group project, or finding focus in independent study, the space works with them—not against them.
The transformation was not just visual—it was behavioral.

Designing for Engagement and Belonging
Since implementing their new learning environment, BAAM has witnessed powerful shifts:
-
Students are more engaged. The ability to move, reconfigure, and claim their space fosters autonomy and ownership.
-
Mentors have more flexibility. Configurable layouts make it easier to adapt to various teaching and coaching styles.
-
The space feels warm and structured. A sense of professionalism and care is embedded in the layout—students recognize it, and they rise to meet it.
The learning environment has become a silent partner in BAAM’s mission, reinforcing values of focus, effort, and personal responsibility.

Outcome Highlights:
-
Enhanced engagement through mobile, student-centered furniture
-
Configurable layouts that support mentorship, collaboration, and independent work
-
A warm, professional space that reinforces structure, purpose, and belonging

At Smith System, we believe learning environments should empower students to envision—and pursue—their full potential. We're proud to support BAAM in their mission to change lives—one student, one classroom, and one future at a time.
