Smith System Meets New Emissions Requirements
Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, the California product emissions method, “Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions From Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers Version 1.1” (CA 01350), began recognizing a lower level of acceptability for product formaldehyde emissions. As such, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute now requires all products that carry the GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification to meet this new standard.
Recognizing the short- and long-term health concerns students face from exposure to poor indoor air quality, Smith System® is proud to announce that its entire indoor product portfolio already meets the lower formaldehyde emissions standard – and has for more than three years. The new formaldehyde emissions limit is 9 µg/m³ (7.3 ppb), which is a decrease from 13.5 ppb.
“Children spend much of their time in schools, where they are exposed to environmental toxins emitted from the objects around then; therefore, manufacturers must design school products to support learning while not being a detriment to children’s health,” says Molly Risdall Parnell. “Smith System remains committed to helping schools create healthy and positive learning environments by ensuring our furniture meets increasingly stringent requirements.”
